Can the foods we eat affect the health of our skin? If we indulge in a little chocolate, will the result really be a blemish or two? The answers: yes and no. The links between diet and skin are real. Nutrition affects the workings of our entire bodies, so it’s no surprise our largest organ, the skin, would be affected by the foods we choose to eat. However, eating a bite of chocolate is not likely to give you your first pimple.

Acne is not solely caused by the foods we eat, but poor dietary choices can be a factor in its progress. Eliminating foods that are common allergy-causing foods such as corn, peanuts, eggs, soy and dairy is a great start. Additionally, foods containing iodides (salt) also worsen acneic skin and may stimulate sebaceous (oil producing) activity.

Similarly, rosacea, another common inflammatory skincare problem, is often triggered by foods that lead to heat and redness in the skin. Some examples include hot foods and beverages, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, cured meats and histamine-rich foods such as parmesan cheese, blue cheeses and salami.

Keep these following general guidelines in mind to help avoid or lessen common inflammatory skincare problems:

Avoid empty calories and junk food

Avoid allergy-causing foods and foods containing iodides

Avoid foods the lead to heat and redness in the skin

Eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, proteins, healthy carbs and oils

Avoid processed food and sugar

Limit meat consumption and choose hormone- and antibiotic-free varieties

Consider taking supplements to get appropriate doses of essential fatty acids and vitamins A, D, E and K, all critical for skin health

With the combination of diligent home care, professional treatments and these smart dietary choices, you are on your way to beautiful skin.
